On December 22, 1940, a British bombing raid targeted the Wipkinger Viadukt in Zurich's Industriequartier, killing one person and damaging the viaduct. The repair work from this incident can still be seen today on the viaduct's side facing Josefstrasse/Viaduktstrasse, where newer stones reveal the historical repair. The original target of the bombing was the German city of Mannheim, but poor weather conditions led the British planes to Zurich instead.
