During the Escalade of 1602, a pétardier named Picot attempted to blow up the Porte de Neuve, but his plan was foiled by Isaac Mercier, a Lorraine soldier who lowered the portcullis, preventing Picot from applying his explosive device. Picot was later killed by a shot from an arquebus, which left a significant mark on his helmet.
